THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Brittingham Viking Organization is now offering two scholarships for the academic year of 2013-2014 and three scholarships for summer courses in 2013. The scholarships over travel to and from the U.S., tuition,accommodation and basic living expenses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. If selected you will have the opportunity to travel and visit past scholars living all over the U.S. The total value of the scholarships is USD 40, 000 for the full year scholarship and USD 10,000 for the summer scholarship. You can choose freely what subjects you want to study at the university.

YOU ARE AN AMBASSADOR FOR SWEDEN

You are a Swedish citizen, studying at a university in Sweden. You are a person who loves making new friends, with a keen interest in international relations in general and in America in particular. You are a devoted student, but also have great social skills, high values and integrity. You can prove commitment to others through extracurricular activities or community involvement. You have an excellent academic record and fluent communication skills in English and Swedish. This scholarship is about getting first-hand experience of American culture and fostering bonds between the Nordic Countries and the U.S. The scholarship emphasizes meeting new people and establishing new friendships. You are expected to act as an ambassador for Sweden during your stay in America. Upon returning to Sweden, you will become part of an alumni network of former scholars, where you will be expected to greet future American scholars visiting Sweden.

THE BRITTINGHAM VIKING ORGANIZATION

In 1953 Thomas Brittingham Jr, a philanthropist and investor, initiated a scholarship program by bringing two students from each of the four Nordic countries to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, for a oneyear period. Tom believed that international understanding can be achieved only by building personal relationships between people. The recipients
of the scholarship, the Vikings, formed an alumninetwork, the Brittingham Viking Organization (BVO). BVO scholars of today can be found in top positions in business, education, politics and government in the Nordic countries as well as in the U.S. Every year, the Vikings meet at an annual convention, the next one being the 60th convention in Stockholm 2013.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON

The city of Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and has about 200.000 inhabitants. It is dominated by the university and its more than 40.000 students. The University of Wisconsin-Madison, has an excellent reputation in a number of academic fields, including business, law, engineering, political science, medicine and sociology. The university was ranked amongst the top 20 in the 2012 Shanghai Ranking of World Universities. University sports are an integral part of campus life and Madison is considered to be the best college sports town in the country. The UW-Athletics teams, the Badgers, are successful in multiple sports, including basketball, hockey and football with the autumn football games as the highlight of the season, with the whole city coming together to cheer in the 83,000 capacity football stadium.

HOW TO APPLY

The scholar will be chosen based on his or her written application and on interviews, which will be held in Stockholm in late February, 2013. It is possible to apply for either, the full year scholarship, the summer scholarship, or both. However, the applicant can only be awarded a maximum of one scholarship. The application should contain
1) personal letter (max. one page, in English) explaining why you should become the next scholar
2) your CV (max. one page, in English) and
3) grade transcripts from college or university.

The application should be emailed with “Brittingham Scholarship” as the subject to sweden@brittinghamvikings.org no later than January 25th 2013.
