We are looking for two M.Sc. students for a thesis project in our RCS (Rail Control Solutions) Division based in Stockholm. RCS develops sells and installs advanced rail control and signaling systems. It is headquartered in Stockholm and main sites are in Madrid, Rome, Bangkok and Braunschweig. The M.Sc. thesis project will be based on Stockholm. The students are going to work in close cooperation with our Quality and Operations Improvement teams.

Topic: IT Structure and Operations Management
The students will be working on a project to design a C#/.NET based solution, to transfer data and functionality from the current MSAccess based solution into a new system. Testing and verification of the system will also be part of the project. They are expected to perform the testing and verification of the system. The students are expected to maintain a holistic view on the project and make sure the delivered solution is user friendly and robust and it would replace the old system without any complications.

Requirements:
The team is required to have a strong skill set in working with C#, .NET, SQL, SharePoint, Web services, XML and data migration methods.

The work will consist of capturing requirements, solution design, coding, implementation, data migration, test and verification.

Strong customer orientation, team work and communication skills are essential since the project will take place in close cooperation with Bombardier employees from several teams and departments.

Background in operations management and improvement methodologies such as Lean and Six Sigma is a merit. It is beneficial to have a sound academic experience and practical experience in Information Technologies.

Since all work will be done in English the students are required to be fluent in written and spoken English.

Expected Deliverables:

  • Requirements
  • System Design
  • Source code
  • Test protocol
  • System implementation
  • Data migration
  • System Help files

Optional Six Sigma Certification
The work will be run in Six Sigma’s DMAIC methodology. If the system is successfully implemented in due time and if the students demonstrate fulfillment of the Six Sigma requirements, it will result in a Green Belt certification for the students. If the students aim for this option, Bombardier will provide training, coaching and certification.

We expect this to be 20 to 30 weeks of work for two students.
